Another contraband-carrying drone has been caught red-handed, this time at a maximum-security prison near Cumberland, Maryland.
Police arrested two men who were preparing to fly a Yuneec typhoon model with a cargo capacity of up to 8 oz (225 g), the Associated Press reports, which was intended to carry synthetic marijuana, prescription narcotics, tobacco, and porn DVDs into the prison.
Authorities said they began investigating the case several weeks ago, which made it possible for them to catch the men before they launched the drone. They were inside a vehicle near the Western Correctional Institution, which is in the Appalachian mountains, 120 miles west of Baltimore. Authorities also investigated an inmate suspected of collaborating with the men.
This is not the first time a mysterious contraband drone has found its way to a prison. In fact, on July 29, a package containing marijuana, heroin, and tobacco was successfully dropped off by a drone at the Mansfield Correctional Institution in Ohio, sparking a fight amongst prisoners. Last year, a drone attempted to deliver cell phones to prisoners in a facility north of Athens, Greece.
Following these incidents, authorities are emphasizing the necessity of developing ways to stop these kinds of drone deliveries. According to the AP, Moyer has said that he will ask the Maryland general assembly for up to $8 million to install drone-detection technology in 20 of the state's prisons.
